CHOOSING GODPARENTS:
Godparents stand as examples of the faith for their godchild and promise to take an active role in encouraging and supporting their godchild in the practice of the faith. Therefore, they must themselves be fully-initiated and practicing members of the Catholic Church. They must be baptized and confirmed.
Godparents will be required to submit a form or letter from the parish where they attend Mass that states they are good, practicing Catholics.
Whether it has been a week, a month, a year or longer, do not be afraid. If you do not remember the steps, please do not let that deter you. The priest will walk you through the steps of making a good confession.
The Sacrament of First Penance (Reconciliation) usually takes place when a child is in second grade of the Religious Education Program. Preparation for the Sacrament of First Penance is two consecutive years of religious education.
The Holy Eucharist is the Lord's greatest and most precious gift to His Church. It is the source and the summit of the life of the Church. In this sacrament, Christ unites the Church and her people to His eternal sacrifice on the cross.
First Holy Communion is a Sacrament of Initiation in which Christ strengthens us with his Body and Blood. First Holy Communion is usually administered when a child is in second grade of the Religious Education Program. Preparation for this sacrament is two consecutive years of religious education.
Confirmation is a sacrament that gives us the special gift of the Holy Spirit to strengthen our Baptismal Commitments and to help us live a good, Holy Christian Life. Preparation for this final Sacrament of Initiation is usually two consecutive years of religious education.
Contact the Parish Office at least 6 months prior to the Wedding date.
An Individual requesting to be married at Sacred Heart Church or Chapel, must be an active, registered member of Sacred Heart parish. If you or a loved one are seriously ill, having surgery, or home bound, please ontact the Parish Office at 301-262-0704 to make arrangements for the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick and/or Holy Communion.
"Are there sick people among you? Let them send for the priests of the Church and let the priests pray over them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick persons and the Lord will raise them up. If they have committed any sins, their sins will be forgiven them." (James 5:14-15)
God calls each person to a particular vocation. Some are called to marriage and parenthood. Some may be called to a single life or a consecrated life as religious brother or sister. Still others He calls to the permanent diaconate or the priesthood, sacraments of Holy Orders.
Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time: thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry.
A calling to the sacred priesthood of Jesus Christ is one of the most beautiful gifts that a Catholic man can receive. The Office of Vocations of the Archdiocese of Washington regularly sponsors events for men discerning the priesthood. For more information, visit DCPriest.org.
