Through prayerful reading of the text and related Scripture, we seek to grow in understanding, appreciation, and love for Jesus Christ and the teachings of His Church. The group's focus has been the Documents issued at the Second Vatican Council.
The Second Vatican Council, commonly known as "Vatican II," was called by Pope John XXIII in 1959 much to the world's surprise. The first ecumenical council in 100 years, Vatican II convened over four sessions from 1962 - 1965 with over 3,000 bishops, lay and religious, advisors, experts, and guest observers in attendance from all over the world. Over the course of these sessions, 16 documents were issued: 4 constitutions, 9 decrees, and 3 declarations. The calling and convening of the Council was the most important event in the Church's history during modern times, and yet, what do Catholics really know about "Vatican II?" Was this Council a source of rupture or renewal?
Find out as we learn from the texts of the four constitutions beginning with Lumen Gentium, the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church; and continuing with Dei Verbum, The Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation. We will read the beautiful, rich texts themselves, and hear the authentic "spirit of Vatican II," who is the Holy Spirit, speaking through Christ's church.
